Toothache is, by far, the most common dental problem. Different reasons cause the pain, and the severity of pain varies from one patient to another. Typically, the severe the problem, the more the pain is likely to be.

Causes of Toothache

A toothache can be triggered by anything, from popcorn stuck in your gum to a broken tooth. Some toothaches are mild and temporary, while others are extreme and can affect you for a long time if you don’t seek medical help. When your tooth is in pain, your whole body is affected since you can’t eat or drink comfortably. Some of the common causes of tooth pain include:

Typically, if you can maintain proper oral hygiene, you can prevent almost all dental problems, including toothache. Here are a few tips to help you prevent toothache:

Brush Your Teeth

The ADA recommends regularly brushing your teeth at least two times a day and flossing them daily. That’s what you should do. Brush your teeth in the morning and the evening for at least two minutes. Be sure to use the right toothbrush and replace it every three months.

Floss Every Night

Flossing removes plaque, as well as any food particles caught between teeth. Yes, flossing is not all that fun, but it won’t be much trouble once you get used to it. Your dentist can recommend the right dental floss and teach you the right flossing techniques.

Use a Mouthwash

Mouthwashes neutralize the acids in the mouth and slow the bacteria’s action. They have anti-bacterial elements that attack bacteria, reducing the risk for cavities. However, you should still brush and floss your teeth.

Get Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and it also strengthens your teeth. You can get the mineral from tap water and toothpaste. There are also fluoride treatments in dental clinics that come at a very reasonable price.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

When sugar meets with bacteria in our mouths, they form acids. These acids attack the enamel, causing cavities. In fact, most cavity cases are a result of taking sugary drinks and foods. If you have to take them, at least wash your teeth thirty minutes later.

Visit Your Dentist At Least Twice a Year

Maintaining proper oral hygiene includes a visit to the dentist every six months. Regular dental exams and cleaning ensure your teeth remains in their best condition. The dentist gets rid of any plaque in the hard-to-reach areas and checks out early signs of infections such as gum disease and cavities. When your teeth are in their best condition, the risk of toothache will be shallow.

Toothache Treatment

Since each toothache is unique, the treatment approaches are quite different. The dentist will get to the root cause of the pain and treat the problem. For example, if the toothache is caused by gum disease, the dentist will treat the periodontal disease and fix the pain once and for all.

However, if the pain is mild and does not seem to give you much trouble, you can try out the at-home approaches. Some tips to alleviate toothache pain include:

  • Try the ice-cold compress method.
  • Use anti-inflammatory medication to alleviate pain and swelling.
  • Rinse your mouth with saltwater
  • Use peppermint tea bags.
  • Crush garlic and apply the paste to the affected tooth
  • Try guava mouthwash
  • Rinse your mouth with clove oil
