Dental Sealants
Rockford & Loves Park, IL

We realize that you can do your best to brush and floss daily, but sometimes the effort is just not enough to completely clean all the surfaces of the teeth, especially the nooks, crannies, and fissures on the biting surfaces of the back teeth.

Dental sealants are a remarkably thin plastic coating that we can brush onto the chewing surfaces of your molars or back teeth. We will do so to add an additional protection and prevent tooth decay.

We realize that you can do your best to brush and floss daily, but sometimes the effort is just not enough to completely clean all the surfaces of the teeth, especially the nooks, crannies, and fissures on the biting surfaces of the back teeth. These hard-to-clean, rough biting surfaces of the premolar and molar teeth are the ideal spaces for food particles to get stuck and produce bad bacteria.  This will lead to plaque and tartar deposits, and inevitably, the development of teeth cavities.

Burch Dental believes that any and all prevention is always better than reactive treatment. Therefore, we use dental sealants to prevent cavities and decay, especially in the molar and premolar teeth that have deeper grooves and fissures.

The team at Burch Dental has a simple goal. That is to ensure your trust through our commitment to quality treatment and your continued satisfaction. It is our daily agenda to maintain a caring environment that is respectful and comfortable for everyone. Our team members are united in our efforts to promote oral health by means of prevention, enhancement, wellness, and rejuvenation. Who Can Benefit from Dental Sealants?

Your team at Burch Dental will recommend dental sealants for:

  • Children – Dental sealants are most often used for children above six years of age, who have permanent molar and premolar teeth.
  • Baby Teeth – in some cases, where there are very deep grooves on the primary molar teeth, we may recommend dental sealants.
  • Adults – Occasionally, we will recommend dental sealants for an adult who is at a higher risk of developing cavities and decay.

The simple conclusion is that anyone of any age can benefit from the application of a dental sealant.

Why are Dental Sealants used?

Teeth have recesses on their biting surfaces; the back teeth have fissures or grooves, and some front teeth have pits. It is these pits and fissures which are the most vulnerable to tooth decay because food and bacteria stick in them and because they are also hard-to-clean areas. Dental sealants are placed in these pits and fissures to fill them in, creating a smooth surface which is easy to clean. Dental sealants are mainly used in children who are at higher risk of tooth decay and are usually placed as soon as the adult molar teeth come through.

The tiniest of food particles can easily become trapped inside the deep ridges on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Try as you might these areas can be incredibly difficult to clean. Especially dealing with an impatient youngster. At Burch Dental we can help prevent food and plaque buildup by sealing these ridges. By eliminating the areas for food to become trapped, the risk for cavities is decreased.

Will You Child Mind Getting Dental Sealants?

Honestly, for the most part the answer is no. The process is quite fast, easy, and not uncomfortable. There is no high-speed drilling or any invasive preparation and the sealant itself does not cause any irritation or even smell funny. It is an easy way to prevent cavities for your active youngster.

What is the Dental Sealants Process?

The application of dental sealants is a totally pain-free, quick, and simply a straightforward procedure.  First our team will clean the back, molar and premolar, teeth very well, and then we place an acidic gel on the biting surfaces. This acidic gel will create small, microscopic pores that will enhance the bonding of the dental sealant gel onto the tooth’s surface. After a few seconds, we will wash away the gel and then thoroughly dry the teeth.  Finally, we will apply the sealants by brushing it on and then hardening the sealant by using a special blue light.

Can You Feel the Sealant on Your Teeth?

We have found that you or your child will not even notice the sealant has been applied. You certainly cannot see the sealant because it is completely clear. When you run your tongue across your teeth, you might be able to feel a slight difference because they are smoother, but there is no discomfort whatsoever. Your teeth may feel as they do after you have them cleaned at your six-month check-up.
