What is the Difference between Invisalign and Traditional Braces?

Both traditional braces and Invisalign perform the same essential function, but there are some huge differences between the two. Each method has its advantages, and disadvantages. Traditional braces can be used to treat more severe alignment issues that Invisalign may not be able to correct. The cost of traditional braces is usually less than that of Invisalign, depending on the actual amount of work that needs to be done.

The materials used for the two methods is the primary difference between traditional braces and Invisalign. The traditional braces are made with metal or enamel, while Invisalign is made totally with plastic. Because of the wires and metal used for traditional braces, if you are active physically you will run the risk of injury to your cheeks if the wire becomes damaged. This can certainly be extremely uncomfortable and can usually only be treated by visiting Burch Dental. It is also important to note that braces are fixed and not removeable without our help. Because of this, they can be difficult to clean, and certainly can be a nuisance at times.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign offers a similar treatment objective without all the hassle that comes with traditional braces. Because the trays are made of clear plastic, they are far more comfortable to wear. There are no wires to worry about. This lowers your risk of injury to your cheeks, your tongue, and your mouth overall.

In addition to being more comfortable, Invisalign braces are also totally removeable. Therefore, it is easier to keep your mouth, teeth, and gums clean. It also means that you can remove them while participating in sporting activities, or during any other activity that might require a mouth guard. You can remove them while eating, allowing you to bite, chew, and enjoy your meal without having to worry about getting food stuck in your braces.

You may like the Invisalign option because they are clear, which makes them difficult to notice. This cosmetic difference can be a major factor for you if would like to repair the alignment of their teeth, but also do not want to have metal pieces attached to your teeth. Due to their aesthetic appeal, durability and comfort, many people prefer Invisalign over traditional braces.

The Invisalign Procedure

The process of getting Invisalign braces begins with a consultation at Burch Dental because we specialize in the placement of these braces. Simply call one of our convenient locations to set an appointment for a consultation. During this consultation, we start by taking digital images of your teeth and your mouth. These images will help us determine the right treatment plan for your individual needs. Once the right treatment plan of action is decided by us together, we will introduce the amazing technology. A 3D CAD/CAM system uses the digital images to design a series of plastic trays that methodically push or pull your teeth, just like traditional braces. We can also use this technology to show you a finished image before we even begin.

Based on your treatment plan and the amount of desired correction, you will be given the correct number of additional trays that are designed to be changed out and replaced every two weeks. Each tray can move a tooth or teeth .25 millimeters at a time. Slow and deliberate movement without the discomfort of metal braces. We will also establish appointments every two months so we can track and make sure the alignment is going according to our plan.

It is imperative, to achieve the results of the program, that you wear your aligners at least 20-22 hours a day. They are removable, but this benefit must not be abused. You need to monitor the time they are out of your mouth or you are simply extending the duration of the entire procedure.

Oral Health with Aligners

It is necessary to understand that wearing your new aligners does not directly help to improve your oral health. It is easier for you to continue to brush, floss, and rinse out your mouth at least twice a day. You will also need to take good care of your aligners by keeping them clean. This simply means rinsing them every night and brushing them lightly with your toothbrush. Straightening crooked teeth, filling unwanted gaps, and adjusting your bite can be easy with the help of Invisalign braces if you continue to take care of your teeth, your gums, and your aligners.
